Position Summary

GCPA is seeking a Volunteer Regional Programs Manager to oversee and coordinate the work of Volunteer Researchers within an assigned geographic region. Research assistants produce monthly reports that are discussed during team meetings held on the last Sunday of each month. At the end of each quarter, researchers draft a 12–15-page report that is submitted for review by Regional Leads (professors) and Lead Research Assistants (LRAs).

The Regional Program Manager ensures that this workflow runs smoothly, that deadlines are consistently met, and that researchers receive the guidance and coordination they need to produce high-quality work. This role is particularly well-suited for retired professionals with a background in international relations, political science, or related fields who wish to remain engaged in meaningful, globally relevant work.

Key Responsibilities

Team Coordination & Oversight

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Volunteer Researchers within the assigned region.

  • Monitor researcher progress and ensure monthly reports are submitted on time and meet GCPA’s quality standards.

  • Identify and address gaps in researcher performance or engagement, escalating issues to senior leadership as needed.

Meeting Facilitation

  • Organize and chair monthly team meetings on the last Sunday of each month, ensuring structured, productive discussions of researchers’ reports.

  • Coordinate scheduling across global time zones to maximize researcher participation.

  • Maintain meeting records, including agendas, attendance, and action items.

Quarterly Report Cycle

  • Oversee the quarterly report process, ensuring researchers begin drafting on schedule and submit complete 12–15-page reports by established deadlines.

  • Serve as a first-level reviewer, providing feedback on structure, clarity, and completeness before reports are forwarded to Regional Leads and LRAs.

  • Coordinate the handoff of quarterly reports to Regional Leads and LRAs, track review status, and communicate outcomes back to researchers.

Workflow & Process Management

  • Maintain a clear regional calendar of deadlines, meetings, and review cycles.

  • Develop and refine internal workflows to ensure efficient research production and timely reporting.

  • Communicate GCPA policies, expectations, and updates to researchers clearly and promptly.

Onboarding & Researcher Support

  • Support the onboarding of new Volunteer Researchers in the region, orienting them to GCPA’s processes, tools, and standards.

  • Provide ongoing guidance and encouragement to researchers, fostering a collaborative and motivated regional team culture.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s degree in international relations, political science, conflict studies, peace and security studies, or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated experience managing teams, projects, or programs in a professional or academic setting.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities.

  • Comfortable working independently in a remote, distributed environment with minimal supervision.

Preferred

  • Retired professionals with extensive experience in international relations, policy, diplomacy, academia, or a related field are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Familiarity with political research methodologies and academic or policy writing standards.

  • Prior experience supervising researchers, graduate students, or volunteers.

  • Regional expertise relevant to GCPA’s areas of focus (Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, or the Pacific).

  • Proficiency in one or more foreign languages.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to remain engaged with international affairs research in a meaningful leadership capacity.

  • Work alongside a global network of researchers, area specialists, and policy analysts.
